There and Back Again First Edition

The Hobbit or There and Back Over again

J.R.R. Tolkien's own clarification for the original edition: "If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfy Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and habitation once more, and can take an interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a lilliputian courage and considerable expert luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler. The period is the aboriginal time betwixt the age of Faerie and the dominion of men, when the famous forest of Mirkwood was still continuing, and the mountains were total of danger. In following the path of this humble charlatan, you lot will acquire past the way (as he did) -- if you lot do not already know all about these things -- much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and become some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected but important period. For Mr. Bilbo Baggins visited various notable persons; conversed with the dragon, Smaug the Magnificent; and was present, rather unwillingly, at the Battle of the Five Armies. This is all the more remarkable, since he was a hobbit. Hobbits have hitherto been passed over in history and legend, possibly considering they as a dominion preferred condolement to excitement. Just this business relationship, based on his personal memoirs, of the one exciting yr in the otherwise tranquillity life of Mr. Baggins will requite you a fair idea of the estimable people now (information technology is said) condign rather rare. They do non like noise." -

Beginning Edition Identification and Notes

-George Allen & Unwin Ltd. of London published the first edition ofThe Hobbit on 21 September 1937 with a print run of one,500 copies, illustrated in black and white past Tolkien, who also designed the dust jacket. The get-go printing sold out by Dec. In early 1938 Houghton Mifflin of Boston and New York reset type for an American edition, and included four of the illustrations in color plates. Allen & Unwin decided to contain the colour illustrations into their second printing, released at the end of 1937. World State of war II and paper rationing disrupted the printing, but subsequent edition were published in 1951, 1966, 1978 and 1995, and the novel has been reprinted frequently past many publishers, and translated into over forty languages.
